Merce Circus - 4 star review05.10.2011
“Merce Circus is more than just a performance showcase for Cunningham’s work: it’s a very genuine, enlightening and above all fun insight into the processes and practice of the legendary choreographer. My only disappointment is that there’s no chance of it returning.”
Lise Smith,

“It is sad, in a way, to be celebrating the American choreographer now that he’s gone, but fascinating to see Umbrella thinking outside of the programming box, something that it is going to have to do more and more in the future.”
Debra Craine, **** The Times

This weekend, the Merce Cunningham Dance Company took up residence for an intensive weekend, providing an opportunity for audiences to interact directly with the multifaceted work of one of the world’s choreographic greats. East London Dance celebrated both aspects of Cunningham’s legacy by filling Stratford Circus with a series of works and artefacts, which viewers were invited to explore and experience using their own set of chance operations.

As you approached the building you were arrested by a ten-foot tall film projection of Merce Cunningham’s popular 1991 piece Beach Birds on the wall opposite. Inside there music concerts with electronic composers David Behrmann and Jesse Stiles, archive chats with Cunningham expert David Vaughan as well as talks, interviews,  film screenings and dance workshops.

The centerpiece of the immersive experience was the playful company performance of Squaregame (1976), made extra special by the presence of 73-year old composer Takehisa Kosugi’s avant-garde score being played live in the balcony. As well as this audiences could learn a bit of choreography or try their hand at creating their own dance event using Cunningham’s technique of chance procedures.

One of the many rooms held a screening of five short filmed works by East London Dance associate artists Tony Adigun, Annie-Lunette Deakin-Foster, Simeon Qysea, Alesandra Seutin and Rosie Whitney-Fish. With movement styles from pulsating Africanistic dance to funky Hip-hop, the five artists explore Cunningham’s ideas and working methods to produce five distinct homages to the man.

The Associate artists were interviewed by IdeasTap - read here.

The Merce Cunningham Dance Company first appeared as part of Dance Umbrella in 1989 and has been a regular visitor to the festival ever since.

“Merce Cunningham reinvented dance, and then waited for the audience... The elegance, simplicity, and force of his work are unique - and undeniable... he has taught us something new and powerful about how to dance and how to live, and about the diversity of art in America.”
Mikhail Baryshnikov

Today [5 October 2011] the Cunningham company takes up residence at the Barbican. A must see farewell season which includes three rich three rich programmes which bring together six cutting-edge dances spanning 40 years and showcasing groundbreaking collaborations with artists including John Cage, Brian Eno and Andy Warhol, performed for the last time in the UK.
