SPACE 2 CREATE Artist Commissions

***Applications open September 2024***

An opportunity for artists and producers to apply for funds and support to create awe inspiring new live dance works.

In September we will be inviting artists and producers to apply for a £4,000 commission to create a new live dance work. We are looking for creatives with clear ambition and determination to develop and elevate their career. East London Dance is committed to embarking on a journey with successful applicants and will provide support beyond the creation of this new work. We see the SPACE 2 CREATE commission as a partnership, a journey where East London Dance and the two successful applicants will grow together.

SPACE 2 CREATE is part of East London Dance’s TALENT HOUSE IGNITE programme.

What we offer:

  • Two separate commissions
  • £4,000 fee per commission
  • Funding Support: Help with applying to Arts Council England for additional funding for your project
  • Free Studio Space: Two weeks of in-kind studio space towards creating the new work.
  • Bespoke producing support: A tailored programme of producer and business support, helping you accomplish your project goals. This will be created in collaboration with the successful applicants.
  • Access to our network: We will help you build relationships, partnerships and create a network that can help grow your project and career.

Who it is for:

Mid-career Artists or Producers with original ideas for new work

When we refer to a creative as “mid-career,” we mean someone who has developed their practice over several years and has either created a body of work or established a career in the creative sector. This could include teaching, choreography, battling, producing or a collection of performed works. Keep in mind that the mid-career looks different for each creative, but it generally signifies a level of maturity and a clear artistic vision.

We are particularly interested in hearing from people who are underrepresented in the sector, such as those who identify as D/deaf and/or disabled, those from low socio-economic backgrounds, those from the LGBTQIA+ community, those from Global Majority heritages* or those who have experienced racism*.

*By the term ‘Global Majority heritages’ we are referring to individuals of African or Caribbean heritage, South Asian heritage, East Asian heritage, West Asian heritage, Central Asian heritage, South East Asian heritage, people of Middle East and North African heritage.

*By the term ‘those who have experienced racism’, we are referring to individuals who have experienced discrimination based on the colour of their skin, race and/or their culture.
